The Spirit of Service

DSC_0065.JPG

Service at St. Mary's School is at the very heart of the commitment we make to living the Gospel.  As the Second Vatican Council decreed, Catholic education exists to make the believer's faith "living, conscious and active."  Throughout the year, we work to generate an enthusiasm for service to others in the name of Christ.  In living, experiencing, and reflecting on service to others, we deepen our understanding of who is our neighbor and an understanding of what it is to love that neighbor.

While there are a number of service oriented organizations for students to join at St. Mary's, there are also many projects in which students participate during the year.  Below you will see a variety of projects that we embrace.

SERVICE PROJECT DESCRIPTION 2014-15 RESULTS

Service Day

Held during Catholic Schools Week at the end of January, Service Day is a wonderful school-wide opportunity to execute many projects at once, all benefiting one unified cause.  In 2015, all grades participated in this project benefiting Woodbine Nursing Home.

Made calendars and door hangers for residents of Woodbine Nursing Home

Jersey Day Sponsored by the Student Council the day after the Superbowl, this event allowed students to come to school in their favorite sports jersey for a $1 donation.  The funds raised will be donated to St. Margaret's Transitional Residence.  $681.05

Globe Collection

This collection is ongoing during Lent and is a collection of the students' own money -- a Lenten sacrifice -- given to benefit the poor children of the world through the Missionary Childhood Association.  The money is collected in a classroom globe, representing the many countries aided by the the MCA's efforts.

TBD
"Food to Go" Drive Sponsored by the Student Council in the spring, this drive brought in much needed pantry items to replenish the shelves of the Christ House pantry.  "To Go" foods that can be provided to those in need of a quick, light meal were donate by students over the course of a week in April.  TBD
Seminarian Sprint Our Annual Seminarian Sprint is a school-wide fundraiser in support of our Diocesan Seminarians.  Students solicit sponsors in advance of the event, and then run relays on the actual day.  It's a great day for students to truly understand and support the efforts of our seminarians, as they join us at the school for the day!  This year 15 seminarians joined us, running and mingling with students throughout the day.  TBD
