Message from the President

Dear Basilica School of Saint Mary Families,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!  My name is Jennifer “Jen” Discher, and I have the pleasure to serve as your Home and School Association (HSA) President for this school year. Last year was anything but ordinary, but our wonderful community has proven that nothing can stop us.  I wanted first to thank our excellent 2020-2021 President of the HSA, Jen Dugas, for all of her hard work and dedication!  I also want to thank all parents, volunteers, and past board members for all of their time/efforts and for pulling off another successful year of activities and fundraising.

Our family has been part of the St. Mary’s community since my daughter started Pre-K.  It’s hard to believe that she is now an 8th grader, and my son is a 4th grader who has also been at our school since his Pre-K year.  Over the years, we have met many great families and have beautiful memories made possible by volunteering and attending our school’s events. The HSA supports our school through fundraising, community development, community ministry outreach, and parent education.  Each year, the HSA manages parents/volunteers and raises funds that are critical to the success of our school’s operation. I welcome all of our new families and encourage everyone to be active in our St Mary’s community by volunteering and participating in our fun events.

We have revamped our Families-in-Service (FIS) Catalog and have added many new FIS positions.  We have also added a sortable Excel spreadsheet that can be used as a resource to select the best fit for your family.  Families have the option of signing up for hourly-based positions or a position with a set amount of hours designated. Additional details regarding FIS and the requirements are on the Parent Resource page of the school’s website. We will also be bringing back the fun with our school and community events.  Be on the lookout for your old favorites and some new additions.

I am open to all feedback and ideas.  The HSA holds monthly meetings at the school, and all parents are welcome to attend.  As we navigate through all of the changing guidelines this year, our goal is to be transparent and communicate with our families.  Please feel free to email me at hsa@smsva.org  with questions, concerns, feedback/ideas, or just to introduce yourself.  I am excited to see what this year brings!  Go Saints!

Respectfully Yours,

Jen Discher

HSA President 2021-2022
